Cartagena de Indias

Cartagena de Indias, is currently, the fifth city in population and economic importance in Colombia.

In 1991, Cartagena was declared Touristic and Cultural District. The city is located in the Caribbean coast, and is the most important touristic site in Colombia.

Cartagena is very well connected with the world. From Bogotá there are daily flights to the Rafael Nuñez International Airport and connecting flights with the most important cities in the world.

With 1’250.000 inhabitants, Cartagena has developed as an urban city, but has conserved its historical site, becoming the second most important port in Colombia and one of the most important touristic sites in the world.

Cartagena´s bay is close to islands and stunning beaches. Its historical site is surrounded by one of the best preserved stone walls from the times of the Hispanic conquest, and was declared National Heritage in 1959, and Human Historic and Cultural Heritage by Unesco in 1984.

Founded on june the 1st, 1533 by Pedro de Heredia, Cartagena was a strategic port of the Hispanic Crown, for its economic wealth and for being an important trading port of slavery.

Felipe II ordered the construction of a city wall to defend Cartagena from invasions. 11 km of stone wall served as defense for the city from the 17th century to the 18th century. On November of 1811, Cartagena was the second city in Colombia to declare its independence from Spain
